Senators Urge Drexel University President to Fire Professor for Inflammatory Social Media Post

(HARRISBURG) – Three Republican state senators have called on the president of Drexel University to terminate a professor for an inflammatory and hateful social media post that they said showed a lack of respect for military personnel.

In a letter to Drexel President John Fry, Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-25), Senator John Rafferty (R-44) and Senator Ryan Aument (R-36) said Professor George Ciccariello-Maher should be fired for a tweet he posted disparaging an airline passenger who gave up his first-class seat for a uniformed soldier.

The senators noted that less than four months ago Ciccariello-Maher came under fire for a tweet encouraging genocide.

Senator Aument, who served as an Army Captain in Iraq, said that the professor’s attack on soldiers and those who show respect for the military, is highly offensive to him personally and should not be tolerated by the University.

“Professor Ciccariello-Maher once again used obviously inflammatory comments to promote his own shocking brand to the detriment of the reputation of Drexel,” the senators said in their letter.  “We are confident that continuing to employ this hateful and disgusting man will do nothing but tarnish the Drexel name.  We encourage you to terminate him as soon as possible.”
